Unsheltered Moments

Unsheltered Moments

Sheltersuit founder Bas Timmer and photographer Tony Dočekal met in San Francisco in 2019, while Bas was testing a new Sheltersuit design. Handing out the newly designed suits, they realized it gave them a unique opportunity to get close to people who are often unseen. Through this work, you’ll meet a few of them. Their stories stand for those we hear too little about.

“Tony and I distributed hundreds of Sheltersuits and documented the stories of the people we’ve met. I believe telling their stories is the first step to making a change.” – Bas

The Sheltersuit Foundation aims to change the representation of the growing group of unsheltered people around the world, while improving their everyday lives. To date, Sheltersuit has made and donated over 35,000 Sheltersuits and Shelterbags to keep people warm and dry while living on the street.

From the streets of New York to Skid Row in Los Angeles, and South Africa and Colombia, Unsheltered Moments has been about more than just giving out garments. It’s about connecting. And we’ve learned that sometimes the simplest acts, like sharing a coffee or a moment of conversation, can shift perspectives and make a difference.
